Tip for the producers out there —

Experiment with multiband sidechain compression using a plugin like Fab Filter’s Pro-MB.  In this stem mastering session the drop has a bit too much high frequency content due to simultaneous white noise and a bright topline synth.  In the photo above I’ve sidechained the topline to the SFX channel, and have set an external sidechain key to compress about 3dbs of 2500hz and up.

In simple terms, what this does is duck some of the very bright frequencies of the white noise and SFX so long as the topline is in the mix.  Why not fix this with EQ?  Because unless you automate the EQ to only cut the highs when the topline hits (and do so dynamically, which is a whole other hassle), the SFX will sound dull when the topline isn’t in the mix.

So in short - sidechaining is not just for your kick and bass!
